I am a semi-retired IT support person with 22 years of experience as a computer systems analyst at UNC in Chapel Hill. I retired early to work for myself and have a more flexible schedule. When the pandemic began most of the large group of faculty, staff, and grad students we supported began working from home, which had it's own set of challenges; but I'm now glad I had that experience.
I can evaluate your current computer, based on your needs and budget, to determine if updates will bring it new life; if you need hardware replaced, or if a new computer is the best option. Hardware upgrades/replacements are limited to hard drives, memory and wifi.
Based on your budget, I can recommend a new laptop (or desktop) that meets your needs. Key components are the processor, amount and type of memory, size and type of hard drive, video card, screen size, and a user friendly array of ports to plug everything into. But don't stop there; get configured! New computers running Windows are not well configured out of the box for privacy, security, or protection against viruses.
An updated operating system and updated drivers are critical to get the most out of your computer. Microsoft releases two cumulative Windows updates, or "builds," a year; in the spring and fall. You should have the latest Windows build, and the latest drivers installed from your PC manufacturer's website for smooth sailing.
Do you feel a need for speed?! With the Covid-19 pandemic came lasting changes to how and where people work. Home internet speeds are more important than ever. Check your current wifi speed here- https://www.speedtest.net/ If it's lower than 100mbps down, you might want to check with your internet service provider, and see if increasing your speed helps fix your problem. If not, or if you have slow areas in your house, or coverage range issues, a new router can solve multiple problems. Sometimes both are needed. Though infrequent, the wifi card can also be the culprit.
A free 15 minute phone consultation is the best way to start. Call, email or text me today with as much detail as possible.
